Project Focus Education Food Crops Soil & Water Environment
Objectives Black Hawk College acknowledges the importance of environmental stewardship through sound agricultural practices and embraces the areas of horticulture and agriculture as a practical union in exploring sustainable crops. Program objectives will be sought after through the implementation of the following goals: Organic production practices to be achieved with the guidance of the Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Service (MOSES). USDA organic certification through certifying agent, Midwest Organic Services Association (MOSA). Determination of crops best suited for organic production according to geographic location and soil structure. Knowledge of acceptable practices in the handling and packaging of organic food products as set forth by the USDA. Identification of crop marketing strategies to assist in project success. Identification of markets best suited to organic food crops. Educational curriculum involving sustainable agriculture practices, with special interest in organic food crops and horticultural roles in food production as well as agricultural marketing, sales, and business. Community awareness of program objectives.
Summary Black Hawk College is committed to promoting the fields of horticulture and agriculture as career choices and is persistent in its mission to engage the community through increased consciousness of the interconnections of the two industries as associated with food production. Black Hawk College embraces a universal goal to further awareness and educate as to alternative crops, with special interest in organic food production, and strategies fostering sustainable agriculture. Program objectives will include, but not be limited to, increased awareness of environmental stewardship and organic farming practices, as well as direct student experience in production, marketing and sales.
